The county of Ribeira de Pena , as it is now constituted, only exists from the middle of the nineteenth century. Before 1855, the municipality of Ribeira de Pena was limited to the parishes of Salvador, Santa Marinha and Santo Aleixo d Além Tâmega, with the seat of the municipality in the place of Venda Nova, only from that date it began to encompass the old municipality of Cerva, composed of the parishes of Cerva, Limões and Alvadia. In the early 19th century, in 1895, the parish of Canedo, formerly part of Boticas, was annexed to the municipality. The Terra de Pena, as it was initially called, has been a municipality since the Christian reconquest of the Arabs. D. Afonso IV, King of Castile, donated the Land of Pena, among others, to D. Guêdo-o-Velho, progenitor of the Barrosos, Bastos and Aguiares families. The first foral granted to the inhabitants of the Land of Pena was granted by D. Afonso IV, in Tentúgal, on September 29,1331. In the 15th century, the domain of the Land of Pena appears in the house of Azevedos, lords of S. João de Rei. In 1841, he moved to Ribeira de Pena, where he obtained a position as a notary and spent some years of his adolescence. Here he studied Latin with Father Manuel da Lixa, in the place of the Granja Velha. On 18 August 1841 he married Joaquina Pereira de França, a young woman of only 15 years, in the church of the Salvador. From this marriage, a daughter was born in 1843, Rosa Pereira de França Botelho Castelo Branco, who died on March 10,1848.
