Fafe is a Portuguese city located in the sub-region of Ave, belonging to the North region and the district of Braga. The name Fafe is due to the fact that, from the beginning of the formation of Portugal, D. Henrique de Burgundy, Count of the Condado Portucalense, already lord of this territory, had donated the current lands to a nobleman named D. Fafes. Later the land was called Montelongo, however, it was changed to Fafe. The highest point of the municipality is in the Serra do Maroiço, in the Alto de Morgair, at 894 meters of altitude. Fafe is located in a valley between the Serra da Lameira, the Montes da Penha and other mountains. In an aerial view, three rivers stand out, lined by trees, that stretch out on the outskirts of the city. They are the Rio Ferro, which has its source in Ribeiros, the Rio do Bugio, which begins its course to the sides of S. Gens, and the Rio Vizela, which welcomes the other two and flows into the Rio Ave. The Rio Vizela originates in Alto de Morgaír, in the parish of Gontim, at 894 m altitude, being this the highest point of the municipality. The municipality has an average altitude of 550 m. In the 1990s, the Queimadela Dam was built in the parish of Queimadela, in the Vizela riverbed, with the aim of supplying the municipality of Fafe with water, more efficiently, previously made available by the Santa Rita Hydroelectric Power Station, in the parish of Golães. Nowadays the area surrounding the reservoir is used as a leisure park and there are some pedestrian routes. Like any other municipality in the Vale do Ave, Fafe had a great propensity for emigration. In reality, the nineteenth century marked the lands of Fafe, especially with the strong emigration incidence to Brazil, at the time the most appropriate land, in search of fortune.
