Laurent Vaginay, and Kévin Laussu, art historian, Malaye ! Patrimoines, present this historic residence located in the old capital of Labourd, Ustaritz. Situated at the intersection of two streets just below the old town hall, Parabisua describes a vast block of dwellings among the oldest in the town. Raised on three levels, the building has an asymmetric silhouette that answers the venerable neighboring Labourdine facades without sharing their ornamental features. No half-timbering or machicolations, indeed, but rather smooth, uncluttered surfaces. The construction mode recalls the traditional city-building using rubble masonry with wooden framing. The building's appearance has changed little since the 19th century. While its walls remain plastered, it has, however, lost the light tone that once highlighted the entourages of its openings. A dormer was cut into the attic to provide more light to a kitchen, while a masonry garage forming terraces now replaces an antique shed formerly topped with a canal tile roof. Open between two streets, the building exposes its main façade and its entrance to the northeast. This façade consists of a simple doorway in situ, while the floor openings are equipped with classic cast-iron sill guardrails. In keeping with custom, the shutters are painted in Basque red. On the ground floor there are three apartments communicating, one with the vestibule, another with a garage via a side courtyard, and the last with the front street. The upper floors house, over two levels, the residence of a doctor. Arranged around a central staircase, the first level features a corridor with an office, waiting room, bedrooms, laundry room and bathroom, a kitchen, a living room, and various other bedrooms on the second level. Although not converted, the attic level is used for storage. Although modest in scale, the building is an intrinsically historical structure tied to the commune's heritage. It thus participates, together with neighboring works, in maintaining the vernacular identity that characterizes the town. Its renovation according to standards would restore more character and contribute to its enhancement within one of the Pays Basques most typical sites.
