Laurent Vaginay, , and Kévin Laussu, art historian, Malaye ! Patrimoines, have the honor to present this remarkable architectural work by Jean Prunetti, built in 1935. On paper, it already impresses with its size and the profusion of its decoration. The architect managed to balance the commander's very contradictory desires: the work would be tinged with Basque regionalism (eaves, balustrades), classicism (columns, arches), a touch of Art Deco (ironwork, fluted-profile fencing) but also, above all, Spaniard in character (ochre coloring, Romanesque tiles, ironwork, moulded frontispiece, pergolas, window boxes, loggias). The construction, started in 1934, was entrusted to the Saint-Sever contractor J. Bastide. Significant changes led the architect to abandon Palladian references in favor of giving more importance to the entrance vestibule and the adjoining living room. Behind a heavy wrought-iron door designed in an Art Deco style, a wide hall reveals itself, its floor covered with a mosaic geometric carpet. The Latin motto Vive Valecve (live and take care of yourself) inscribed in fine ceramic glass tesserae is a physicians motto. The presence of such a work is rare in the region and worth noting. It could have been the work of an Italian mosaicist, as suggested by other similar elements (granitos, terrazzo, and Roman marble mosaics). On one side extends the old dining room and its chimney with diverted ducts illuminated by a bow-window rotunda; on the other, a contorted staircase tinted with modernism rises. Two bedrooms transformed into a living room and their bathroom/wc with the kitchen complete the ground floor plan. The upper floor comprises five bedrooms, including one connected to a studio-fireplace corner opening majestically onto the central loggia. In addition to the colored skylight above the stairwell, note the originality of most of the fireplaces, all executed according to the architects drawings. The house sits elevated on a substantial basement housing technical areas, those intended for domestic service and later the medical cabinet. This work marks the transition between the street level and the garden level. The park, laid out by the horticulturist A. Labaste of Gamarde, visually corrects the irregular division of the plot, giving it a semblance of order. To the north lay an orchard and its watercress bed; to the south, a tennis court now gone. A central roundabout creates a visual transition between the house and the meadow opposite. In addition to the regular ornamental garden on the street side, this landscape ensemble formed a frame that highlighted the four carved façades of the residence (a relatively rare feature worth noting). This property has preserved most of its Art Deco lighting and sanitary fixtures. The complexity of the materials and equipment composing it (reinforced concrete, old roller shutters, original joinery, etc.) is inherent to its apparent decay but, conversely, gives it a significant value due to its authenticity. Patrimony enthusiasts will recognize the advantage of a work still preserved in its 1930s as is condition, which today has become a real luxury.
